Macular Degeneration

Macular Degeneration is the number one cause of blindness in people over the age of 65. It affects the central vision, usually sparing the peripheral vision. There are 2 types. Dry Macular Degeneration accounts for 90 percent of those affected. Vitamins high in antioxidants, zinc, and lutein such as MaxiVision have been shown in many studies to help with this type. The Wet form of the disease is the most vision threatening. It is caused when blood vessels from under the macula grow into the central vision. Those blood vessels tend to break and bleed, causing drastic decrease in vision. There is a new treatment for this type which consists of several intravitreal injections. These injections have been shown to decrease the damage caused from the blood vessels.
